Pattaya pulls in international guitar-playing guests

The annual Pattaya Classical Guitar Festival & Competition is back at the Siam Bayshore Pattaya in Chon Buri, with many showcases by leading musicians from around the world presented on Oct 27.

The 5th Pattaya Classical Guitar Festival & Competition will take place at Siam Bayshore, Pattaya, on Oct 27.

Held for the fifth year by Sukosol Hotels in association with the Thailand Guitar Society and Pattaya People Media Group, the festival offers music enthusiasts a unique opportunity, showcasing many of the world's top luthiers and musicians.

It boasts an impressive list of participants, including artists and students from Japan, Germany, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Switzerland, America, Poland, Indonesia and Thailand.

This all-day event will kick off with the adult and junior guitar competitions at 9am, followed by a world-class guitar exhibition at 1pm.

The Thailand Guitar Society student concert will start at 2pm, followed by a performance from the "Finest Young Guitarists" starring Natdanai Phuaphanprasong (Thailand), the Juggajee Guitar Duo (Thailand) and Ouo Jeli (Indonesia) at 4pm.

The announcement of the competition winners will follow, with the first prize in the adult competition being a concert guitar valued at $US4,500 (141,000 baht), made by the world-renowned Indonesian luthier Hanief Palopo.

At 6pm, the "Master Concert" with performances by local guitar masters Woratep Rattana-umpawan, Sakol Siripipattanakul, Pongpat Pongpradit, Santi Kaewjai and 10P11 Guitar Duo will begin.

The day will then culminate with a spectacular concert at 8pm, featuring expert performances from Pia Gazarek Offermann (Germany), Paul Cesarczyk (USA/Poland), Leon Koudelak (Switzerland/Czech Republic), Tomonori Arai (Japan) and Hitoshi Miyashita (Japan/Thailand), and Maria Duo (Japan).

Tickets cost 500 baht (400 baht for students) and can be purchased at the hotel. Proceeds will go to the Father Ray Foundation, which takes care of orphaned, abused and disadvantaged children and students with disabilities.
