The Classical Voice Department of College of Music, Mahidol University, is staging The Land Of Smiles, a romantic operetta by Franz Lehar at the Music Auditorium on Nov 28-30 at 7pm, plus a 1pm matinee on Nov 30.

The Land Of Smiles will be staged at Mahidol University’s Music Auditorium on Nov 28-30.

The three-act work is notable for its bittersweet ending, which the Viennese were quite fond of. The title refers to the Chinese custom of smiling regardless of what happens in life.

Set in Vienna and Beijing in 1912, the story is about a Viennese countess who marries a Chinese prince and returns with him to his homeland. But she's unable to come to terms with his culture and especially that he can take other wives. At last, she decides to leave her husband and return to her homeland. This is the department's ninth opera production, with Napisi Reyes as stage director. The cast consists of junior, senior and graduate students, with younger students in the chorus.

The play will be fully staged and performed with a student orchestra conducted by Dr Jerry Yonkman.

The operetta will then be staged as part of the Music and Performing Arts International Festival 2013 at Burapha University in Chon Buri on Dec 1 at 3pm.

Tickets cost 200, 500, 800 and 1,000 baht (100 baht for students) for the Nov 28-30 shows.
