Two musicians who have performed together since their early years of classical studies at the renowned music and dance school, Lyon CNSMD, are set to delight Bangkok crowds with performances of Beethoven’s complete sonatas for cello and piano on May 7-8.

Cellist Alexandre Vay, left, and pianist Dimitri Papadopoulos.

Presented in collaboration with Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Music, the concert will take place at Siam Society, Asok Road, with different programmes on each night, starting at 7pm.

On the first night, pianist Dimitri Papadopoulos and cellist Alexandre Vay will perform Beethoven’s Cello Sonatas No. 1, 2 and 3 on May 7.

The following night will see the duo proceed with Sonatas No. 4 and 5 after which they will be joined by Thailand’s notable violinist Tasana Nagavajara in another Beethoven programme of Piano Trio Op 70 No. 1 — The Ghost.

Both Dimitri and Alexandre obtained a master’s degree in chamber music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Lyon (Lyon CNSMD).

They have performed all over Europe during prestigious festivals, with an extensive repertoire mixing indispensable works (by Beethoven, Franck, Britten etc) with less performed ones (by Reger, Carter, von Knorr etc).

Alexandre was mentored by several foremost cellists and his career is marked by collaborations with major figures in the musical world, including Ulf Hoelscher, Daniel Blumenthal, Mate Szüks and Pascal Devoyon.

Passionate about teaching, the 28-year-old is currently a cello professor at the Summer Academy of Music in Trouville-sur-Mer, France.

The American-born Dimitri has won numerous music competitions in France, Italy and Germany. He performs regularly at recitals, chamber concerts and as a soloist accompanied by orchestras in numerous countries and at renowned festivals.

The 29-year-old pianist is now a piano professor at the Conservatoire de Musique in Geneva.
