Pro Musica Orchestra and the Mozart Effect

Pro Musica Orchestra and the Mozart Effect

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Pro Musica Orchestra will perform three musical pieces composed by Mozart during his early years, at Four Seasons Hotel on July 14.

Entitled “Mozart Effect”, the concert will begin with the first symphony, K16, which Mozart wrote when he was eight. More than a historical curiosity, the symphony is sprightly, charming and demonstrates the composer’s nascent style.

The major work on the evening programme, which will start at 8pm, is the Sinfonia Concertante K364 for violin and viola. This is one of Mozart’s finest works and was composed in 1779 when he was 23 years old.

The violin and viola act as a duet through all three movements, engaging in some glorious harmonies and
impassioned exchanges. The soloists for this performance will be two of Thailand’s finest string players — Siripong Tiptan (violin), concertmaster of the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and Tasana Nagavajara (viola), artistic director of Pro Musica Orchestra. The final item on this Mozart feast will be the Symphony No. 29 in A Major K201, written when the prolific composer turned 17. The musicologist, Stanley Sadie, called this work, “a landmark... personal in tone, indeed, perhaps more individual in its combination of an intimate, chamber music style with a still fiery and impulsive manner”.

The first movement of the symphony will be easily recognised by anyone who has watched the movie, Amadeus, in which the piece is featured prominently.

Pro Musica Orchestra is a reincarnation of one of Thailand’s first professional orchestras, which was known by the same name. Pro Musica began in 1958 as a string quartet and grew into a chamber orchestra. It performed regularly until 1975 when it morphed into the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.

The new Pro Musica was formed in 2012 by a batch of Thai musicians who returned from their studies abroad.

The upcoming concert will be conducted by the honorary conductor and the founder of the original Pro Musica, Privy Councillor ML Usni Pramoj.
