ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Welcome to Guru’s Gate Crasher, your ultimate guide to finding something fresh to do in this big city.

PARTY

What better excuse to get down and sweaty on a late-night dance floor than the birthday of one of the city’s bigger DJ names? Coran (soundcloud.com/corandj) will celebrate in style tonight (Jul 18) at Glow (Sukhumvit Soi 23, fb.com/glowbkk) in what has been self-dubbed “an epic four-hour journey into the meaning of life and sound”. Quite the promise — let’s see if he can deliver. Entry is free until 11:30pm, B350 after with a drink. Mr Chao will support. Things should go late, unless the police show up to kill the buzz early, as they have been doing of late.

PARTY

If you prefer your beats a little more funky, also on tonight (Jul 18) across town is Dope as Funk. In control of the breaking decks will be Deejay Luck-E, DJ Logan Bay, DJ Karl Andy and guest host UNDA. Expect 80s, 90s hip hop, rock and house classics — a bit of, er, everything by the sounds of it. But why not, as a whole night of one genre gets boring. Venue is Wine Bibber Sangria (Ekamai Soi 2, fb.com/WineBibberSangriaBangkok) — the top two floors. Entry is free.

LIVE MUSIC

The saddest gig of the week is definitely You Were Here at Harmonica (307 Phetchaburi Soi 38/1, fb.com/HarmonicaBkk). They say they’re sorry to close, but we can still be sad, particularly after such a strong Deerhoof gig there last month as well as the recent loss of Cosmic Cafe at RCA. The format is a day fest from 4pm on Sat (Jul 19). On the line-up are Aire, Wednesday, Degaruda, Neuter Lover, Lowfat, Zweedz n Roll, Rocket Science and Eico. Food will come from June Bear Garden. Not quite old enough to be an institution, Harmonica did plenty for the local live scene over its three years, so go pay your dues. Entry is B100.

LIVE MUSIC

If you haven’t heard anything about Smalls (186/3 Suan Phlu Soi 1, goo.gl/SQhIQ2) by now, you might be spending too much time on Sukhumvit Soi 11. The new live music hub in Sathon is booking a steady roster of live acts throughout the week. Acts such as the Vintage Blues Band, Benz Blues Band, Jazz Friends and other assortments and ensembles have been rocking the cosy room on the ground floor, all in the key of blues. Or head to the rooftop for some open-air action. Check their FB page for gig roster. Entry is free too.

LIVE MUSIC

On Thu (Jul 24), catch eco-rocker Gede Robi playing live at Fatty’s Bar & Diner (fb.com/fattysbardiner) from 8pm. The Balinese activist can usually be seen out front of grungy outfit Navicula but will unplug for the occasion. Support of this leg of the new EP tour will come from Edward Andrews, Joe Cummings and Scott Hess from Love Bone, Rocket Science, Matthew Fischer & The Fishes and Degaruda. Free entry, with food and booze on offer inside.

FOOD

For some late-weekend gastronome action, try Artisan Trinity Dinner on Sun (Jul 20). From 6pm, the trio of Vivin, Chef Bar and The Accidental Butcher will present a three-course spread to showcase what they are all about. Numbers are limited to 25 and you need to pay in advance (02-715-0602, contact@vivinmaison.com). Tickets are B1,900 per person, with a glass of sparkling. Further booze is on top, which might deter some eaters but won’t detract from the flavours. Venue for the feast will be the garden garage of The Accidental Butcher (53 Ekamai Soi 10, www.theaccidentalbutcher.com). Starters will be served at 7:30pm sharp.
