Diana Krall returns to Bangkok

Award-winning jazz pianist and songstress Diana Krall is set to perform at the Royal Paragon Hall of Siam Paragon on Friday.

As one of the best-selling artists of her time, Krall, 51, has released 12 studio albums since early 1990s. To date, she has earned nine gold, three platinum, and seven multi-platinum albums.

After her last visit a few years back, Krall is now returning to Bangkok with "Diana Krall Wallflower World Tour Live in Bangkok 2016" where she will be performing cover versions of pop and rock hits from Wallflower -- her 12th studio album, which was released earlier last year.

The album, earning a gold certification in Canada, was produced by 16-time Grammy winner David Foster. Some of the songs from her latest album included cover versions of Desperado by the Eagles and the album's namesake Wallflower which was written by Bob Dylan.

"These were the songs that I first heard on the radio and family stereo when I was a teenager -- that is when I wasn't listening to Fats Waller and, of course, someone called Elvis Costello," said Krall.

While the album Wallflower consists mostly of cover tracks, it also features a song that has never been released before like If I Take You Home Tonight, which was originally written by Paul McCartney for his 2012 album Kisses on the Bottom. The song didn't make the cut for McCartney's album, but he gave Krall the permission to record the song for her own.

Wallflower also brings Krall in collaboration with Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams -- an experience that has proven to be truly memorable for the jazz diva. She recalled an amazement she felt that her voice was as "similar and sympathetic" as that of Adams. The two artists performed a duet version of Feels Like Home. While the song was originally by American singer Linda Ronstadt, the most popular version to date was that of Chantal Kreviazuk, which was released in 1999 as part of the soundtrack album for American teen drama Dawson's Creek.

Outside of recording studios, Krall said her current fascination is skiing. "If I have a moment or two to go skiing, life is good. They play music on the ski hill, so I'm well covered," she said.

Despite nabbing numerous awards under her arms from Grammy to Juno, Krall decided that's not where her true achievement lies. Her achievement, explained the singer, is rather the happiness of her family. Being on a world tour may take her far from her loved ones -- her husband Elvis Costello and their two sons -- but at least she has the ever evolving technology to keep everyone close. "My boys spent a little time with me on tour, and then they had to return to school," said Krall, "It's hard to be apart, but life is easier thanks to cell phones, FaceTime, et cetera."

Krall has kept quiet to what her future projects would hold. But it's likely that fans may not have to wait long to find out. "The new ideas are just beginning to appear in my dreams now. Perhaps you will hear a glimpse of them at the upcoming concert in Bangkok."
