Inked for a week

Guru tests out some fashionable temporary tatts

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

What's left to talk about in style after clothes, accessories, hair and make-up, but skin? And we're not just after skincare, which takes ages to show subtle results, but something trendy you can do to your skin instantly, temporarily and harmlessly for some dramatic self-expression. The hot topic in style this week is sticker tattoos. The benefits of this form of peel-on skin décor are vast, ranging from deliberately annoying conservative folks to entertaining the idea of getting a real one. Whatever your motive, you gotta know what's out there, and that's where we come in. Guru reviews three local vendors for temporary tatts, all of which can be ordered via your phone.

Moth Project

"You get what you pay for" clearly applies to tempo-tattoo shopping. Moth Project is a local tattoo vendor that first caught our eye from an impressive online catalogue. Literally hundreds of current designs, ranging from cartoony to serious line-works and watercolours, are sold individually for 100 baht, give or take. What you're paying for is crisp, high-grade printing from the US. Not only do the tatts stay on for a good week despite our absolute negligence, depending on the design you've opted for, they can look so real your parents feel the need to interrogate you again, and again, just to be sure. The day after application, a clear residue that normally remains to seal the tattoo on your skin dissolves completely, leaving only the design seamlessly stamped on your skin. It's magical.

Recommended items: Pizza, anatomical heart, summer-themed illustrations and hipster animals.

Tattwo Teller

Moth Project's closest competition is Tattwo Teller. Tattwo Teller's comparably crisp and tenacious products may have fewer options, but their secret weapon is the indie fashionista's highly sought after freckle tattoo. In case, you haven't heard, it's a "look". Tattwo Teller's freckle tattoo is no different than any other temporary tattoo on offer. There's just an extra bit of technique involved in applying them onto your face for a natural effect. We recommended cutting the tattoo sheet up into manageable pieces, so you can easily manoeuvre the placement of freckles on your face. You should also consider having a patch on your nose to make the appearance more prominent. To our surprise, makeup can be applied over the tattoo without difficulty. However, upon makeup removal, the tattoo will align with your makeup, rather than your skin and, to be honest, that's probably for the best. Just consider them among the ranks of false eyelashes, a one-time use accessory for special occasions.

Recommended items: Freckles, simple text, quirky minimal designs and custom orders.

Little Twinkle Shop

Little Twinkle Shop has been a supplier of these fun body stickers since 2011. However, when we gave them a try, we were unfortunately let down by the quality. Though you can purchase sheets of multiple tattoos priced from B80 up to B200, the designs are noticeably pixelated, occasionally glitched and aren't likely to last more than a day or two -- given they didn't fall apart the second you peeled off the paper backing. On the other hand, the IG shop does offer standard quality flash gold tattoos, a necessary accessory for Wonderfruit and your girlfriend's gypsy/hippie-theme birthday party.

Recommended items: Gold tatts.

GO FULLY CUSTOMISED

Prefer to draw your own ink? That's hardcore. Make sure your liner of choice is as hardcore as you are, as in resilient to combative forces. If you don't have one in mind, try out Kat Von D's Tattoo Eyeliner, available at Sephora. As if the name wasn't a big giveaway, this quick-drying eyeliner was specifically engineered to resist smudging and wear. Plus, with a pointed yet flexible brush tip — almost like a Chinese calligraphic brush — you really have no excuse to not use your creativity to the max.
