SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

On the streets and outside of formal contexts, the dress code is more fluid and there's more leeway to work out your look of the day. Granted, you should still be appropriately attired during this mourning period, but since we're going to be in black for some time, why not be so in a refined manner?

Men have it so much easier because they can get away with pants and a crisp shirt, while the range women have to consider can be a tad more mind-boggling. There are no concrete rules on what falls into "appropriate attire" when one is out in public doing whatever it is they must, but it's fair enough to say that now is the time to leave the more revealing and tight pieces at the back of your closet. When choosing your bottoms, stick to long pants and skirts of respectable length, without high slits.

The other easy possible option is to throw on a black blazer, especially on days when you've run out of black clothing. Now is a grand time to invest in a well-fitting one that you could wear even once the mourning period has passed. Dresses too can be an easy go-to -- just make sure that it's not too form-fitting and that it reaches the knees. Bags in black that don't sport ornamentation too crazy would also be appropriate. Muted colours are also suitable for the occasion: beige, white, navy blue, deep purple and various shades of grey are acceptable too.

It's no time to make a fashion statement now, but looking dull is not a requirement. Yes, we're aware that solid-black pieces are undersupplied in the market, but provided you dress modestly, the good intent will shine through. If there are embroideries, prints or motifs, keep them to a minimum. To add some depth to your look, fabrics such as tweed, velvet and jacquard create dimension without looking too flashy. Steer clear of shiny and sparkly fabrics such as patent leather, metallics and lace cut-outs that show too much skin.

Your mourning-closet shopping need not be limited to the 100 baht tees now selling on the streets. We've rounded up some of the best looks and pieces from various fashion houses for those looking for sophistication, durability and craftsmanship.
