MUSIC FESTIVAL

Welcome to Guru’s Gate Crasher, your ultimate guide to finding something fresh to do in this big city.

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

At this time of year, you can be guaranteed plenty of outdoor antics on offer, but this season's spoils seem particularly appealing. Even though today (Dec 5) is dry in honour of Thai Father's Day, the rest of the weekend has plenty on offer, event-wise.

For a start, the Kingdom's oldest festival, Big Mountain Music Festival (www.bigmountainmusicfestival.com), comes to its sixth instalment. Over Sat and Sun (Dec 6-7), catch the best of local live acts including Paradox, Carabao, Da Endorphine and Moderndog — all the usual suspects — plus some international acts from the region to round out proceedings. The 100-acre Bonanza site should pack in 50,000-plus revellers, so get there early to secure a decent campsite, if you can. Tickets are B2,000, with camping included and transportation available.

LIVE MUSIC

For those staying in town over the long weekend, two more live gigs will happen on Sun (Dec 7). First up is an interesting offering at The Overstay (Charan Sanit Wong Soi 40, fb.com/TheOverStay), who have billed Ras Muhamad in collaboration with Irie Beatz. The Indonesian-born talent is known for pushing into a bunch of fields, most notably as a recording and performing artist, author, radio host and producer. Support will come from Dakta Dub with Bangkok Smoke Run and Until That Day. Entry is B250; from 8pm to avoid curfew confusion later.

LIVE MUSIC

The second live showcase of Sun (Dec 7) will happen at Overground Bar (6/1 Sukhumvit Soi 22, fb.com/OvergroundBarCafe). Popscene are busy again, organising a night of tunes headlined by the UK's Das Fluff. They will be supported by Wasabi Bytes and The Ladz, who will play an acoustic set to ease everybody into it. Free entry too; from 8pm.

DJs

Then on Tue (Dec 9) sees the invasion of the DJs happen again at 808 Festival. The big names are getting bigger, and Richie Hawtin is one of the best, so might be worth the trip out to Bitec (88 Bang Na-Trat Road, www.bitec.co.th) to see him, along with Nicky Romero, Blasterjaxx, Loco Dice, and others. The venue will at least cater to the crowds and the budget should be good enough for some lighting rigs and cool effects. Tickets are B2,200, or B2,700 for VIP action. G
