Beauty on the go

No need to pack your entire dressing table with you this holiday, just follow these handy tips

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

December is the peak travelling period, thanks to public holidays and the fact that many of us forgot about our annual leave days up until this month, and rush to use them before they expire. Since no holiday is complete without a few selfies posted on Facebook, it's a good idea to make sure you look your best when you're on the go. Here are some tips on how to stay gorgeous without having to pack everything from your dressing table.

1. Stock up on samples

Many brands today now offer free samples in single-use packages. Instead of carrying an entire bottle of moisturiser, for example, just bring those free samples with you. This also helps reduce the risk of your skincare bottle exploding and spreading its gooey contents on your clothes. If your skin is sensitive and prone to irritation, ask for samples when buying your usual products.

2. Realise your make-up's versatility

You don't have to take every make-up product with you when your travel. You can actually use your lipstick as your cheek colour and vice versa. Eyebrow pencils can easily be replaced with brown eyeshadow or even mascara.

3. Pack Vaseline

Petroleum jelly is a great multitasking tool. It is great for your lips, skin and nails, and if you ever forget your make-up remover, your good ol' Vaseline can do the job just fine. Baby oil is also a good choice, but there's more chance of leakage.

4. Protect your products

What's the point of carrying products with you only to find that they are broken beyond repair when you arrive? All the tossing and turning while travelling can, and usually does, break your make-up. From crushed powder to broken bottles, everything is possible. Safeguarding your precious products are very simple. For powdered products such as eyeshadow and facial powder, place a cotton ball or cotton pad on top of it inside the container to keep things from breaking while travelling. For bottled products, wrap a towel around it and secure it with a rubber band.

5. Don't forget baby wipes

You don't have to be a mother to rejoice in this wonderful product. Baby wipes can do so many things — they are a hand sanitiser, make-up remover, body odour fighter when you don't have the chance to shower, and keep your skin clean even when water is not available.

6. Hide it

Don't feel like you're looking your best? A large pair of sunglasses and red lipstick are all you need. The sunglasses can virtually hide the upper half of your face, and the lower half can't go wrong with a good lip colour. Red is always a safe bet and it goes well with dark shades.

Purrfectly beautiful

For the 2014 holiday collection, Shu Uemura launches "Shupette by Karl Lagerfeld for Shu Uemura", featuring the snow white feline princess Choupette, or Shupette.

In this collection, Lagerfeld flaunts her perfect cat eye in a series of eye make-up products — glitter set, false lashes, eyeliner, eye shadow and brushes, along with other cute creations such as pearly face powder and fabulous nail enamels.

Gifts of giving

Aveda's 2014 holiday collection gift sets not only provides customers with a beautiful way to give, but also give back. The packaging is handmade lokta paper from Nepal. For this community the income from papermaking helps them support their families and communities. More than 5,000 people have been employed to make more than 1.8 million sheets of paper for Aveda gift sets over the course of its seven year partnership.
