Rosebud lips in the new year

For pouting petal-like lips, Lancome has released a collection of lipsticks in rose-inspired colours.

Rose-inspired L'Absolu Rouge (1,200 baht).

According to Roman legend, the flower was originally white but later bloomed in a scarlet red because of Cupid's blood after he got stung by a bee while playing on a rose bush.

The rose family include natural species, cultivars and hybrids, from white to black roses, the latter with petals in a dark red.

Ten varieties were selected for a colorimetric extraction technique that allows copying their petals' true colours. Each petal undergoes a chromatic analysis to reproduce its exact shade using a spectrophotometer, which is a photosensitive cell coupled with a computer, recording the light reflected by the petals.

When converted into colorimetric values, the data is then used to reproduce the roses' vibrant hues by adding the exact dose of pigments and mother of pearl to the lipstick base for making L'Absolu Rouge.

Varieties include Damask Rose giving a bright, Persian pink shade; Bengal Rose, a warm spiced pink; Black Pearl Rose, a deep crimson; and Grand Amour Rose, an intense red.

The Queen of Flowers itself is an emblem of Lancome founded by Armand Petitjean in 1935. One of the company's first ever lipsticks was Rose de France with a pinky red shade and scented with Bulgarian rose.

A hybrid named after the brand was designed by renowned horticulturalist, Georges Delbard, who selected magenta and mauve varieties as parent roses. Born in 1973, the baby Lancome Rose boasted thick glossy petals in a deep fuchsia.

Now blooming in a French village, in Bourbonnais, Allier, the flower is grown with an annual production restricted to just a few thousand plants.

The cultivation provides plant cells for making L'Absolue L'Extrait skincare products, while petals have been transformed into one of the 10 colours from Lancome's new collection of hydrating lipsticks.

Absolu Rouge.
