Green living, sustained

The Sustainable Design Book has unlikely uses for unlikely things

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

The concept of sustainability is gaining steam. Green this! Green that! You may have already seen a lot of sustainable, green products. But if you think you’ve seen all there is to see, think again — you haven’t read this book.

The Sustainable Design Book presents a plethora of flabbergasting products, with sustainability as a focus. The book is divided into four sections — Materials, Furniture, Lighting and Home and Personal Accessories.

Details and photos of the products will surely excite you. Icons provide information as to the type of sustainability the products feature.

First is the Materials section. Noteworthy products here include Plastic Fantastic kitchen vessels made from plastic grocery bags and N.I.P.S kitchen vessels made from stale bread dough and salt.

A noteworthy highlight in the Furniture section is Tofu, an armchair made of real tofu that has been dehydrated and subsequently thermally shocked. And there is T-Shirt Chair is made from worn-out T-shirts on a contoured, steel-wire frame.

The Lighting section boasts the Marine Light, a lamp made from raw and wild seaweed, and the beautiful yet simple Beute Lamp, made from corrugated cardboard.

The Home Accessories section takes what you normally see in your kitchen to another level. Take a look at Bee’s Wrap, an alternative to plastic wrap that can be used to preserve food, made with beeswax and jojoba oil, which is rich in antibacterial properties. Bamboo Charcoal Water Filters are made in clay kilns in Japan and offer an easy and natural way to filter tap water.

The Personal Accessories section features the Animal Coffin, a biodegradable coffin for animals made with starch, flour, coffee grounds and vinegar. After burial, the coffin — and the dead animal inside it — will eventually turn into nutrients for trees.

Q&As with the designers of the products are dispersed throughout the book, giving readers insight on design trends and techniques, as well as the inspiration behind the products.

You are sure to be excited, inspired and delighted as you flick through the pages. When sustainability collides with design, the result always amazes you.
