Pimsiri "Ploen" Nakswasdi is the founder and designer of The Parrot (2/F, Zen Department Store, www.theparrotbangkok.com, fb.com/theparrotbangkok), an apparel brand with an all-day concept, meaning its looks are acceptable for both work and a night out. Perfect timing, we say, as the Bangkok fashion scene is leaning more and more toward casual chic, while propelling itself away from the stigma of the glitz and glam associated with over-dressed hi-sos. We catch up with Ploen to find out more about her brand, her muse and her next collection.

Do you have a muse?

Yes, my mother. I looked through some of her photographs back when she was a teenager. Even then she had her own signature style that you would call seriously trendy. She carried her timeless look through each period of her life, and even now her fashion sense is second to none. I also admire her optimism, energy and elegance, which were the source of inspiration behind each of The Parrot's outfits. I like to keep in mind that each piece I design should easily pair with other items in a woman's closet, yet should also be able to stand out and make its own statement.

You have a degree in management. How has that benefited you?

During my studies, I learned how to be a captain who oversees the whole ship. This includes the system, the crew, the strategy and the route for the entire journey, while dealing with obstacles and overcoming many challenges. Most importantly, I had the opportunity to exchange thoughts with other students from around the world. This opened my eyes and helped me generate new ideas that could be implemented with many businesses in real life. In the fashion industry, my brand is just like a ship trying to make its way to its destination. I know the design and finished product alone cannot guarantee the brand's success, but it's the marketing, management and finance skills I've honed from past experiences and education that will help establish The Parrot as an international fashion company in the near future.

What makes the parrot original?

The uniqueness of the brand is the harmony and the balance between the designer's vision and the consumer's desire for functionality. Designers build their collection upon their aesthetic preferences, whereas consumers are looking for something functional at a reasonable price. The Parrot offers a line of clothing that combines these two very important aspects of fashion, which ultimately delivers a "look" that's flawlessly chic.

What's your take on the current fashion scene in Thailand?

Before, many people imitated their styles according to what was considered popular; this used to be defined by local and international celebrities. Now, however, there is a new generation of designers who create their work from their own passion, follow no rules and aren't afraid to think outside the box, which I think is very interesting, as it gives the fashion industry a variety and fresh ideas.

Who is your fashion icon?

Olivia Palermo. Her style is so effortlessly chic, with a modern twist on the classic vibe. She usually pairs luxurious designer pieces with inexpensive items; her expertise in mixing and matching outfits is certainly inspiring to me. One of her fashion tips that I've taken to heart is, "It's not about how much something costs. I always like adding a bit of high street to things."

Can you give us a hint about your next collection?

Our next collection will integrate the hard and soft -- not only will we be mixing textures, but also many other elements. It will definitely be worth the wait!
