Not-so-random acts to celebrate World Kindness Day

A city of angels

Seventeen years ago today (Nov 13), a bunch of international NGOs got together and said, "Let's set aside a day, just one day a year, to remind people to go out of their way to be kind to each other. Because this whole being organically kind to each other thing just isn't working out." And thus, World Kindness Day was born.

Obviously, this convention hasn't quite caught on in our city. Not that Thais aren't kind; we do things like overlook the rules for penniless pageant princesses all the time. But there's always room for improvement. Guru has a few suggestions on how to be kinder than usual on World Kindness Day.

1  Instead of accosting long-lost acquaintances with the usual Thai-style greeting, "You've gained weight!", try this slightly more complicated version: "Hi! What have you been up to?" Yes, it's a few words longer -- and you'll have to suppress your judgmental nature, which is a lot to ask -- but just be kind today to those who weren't graced with your surely sky-high metabolism.

8  Gymmers, specifically cardio freaks, can limit their treadmill seshes to 30 minutes -- as gyms usually require -- so others can also have their turn. We're not asking you to sacrifice your fitness; you can continue your run in the great outdoors.
