Exports won’t reach 15% target

Finance Minister Kitiratt Na-Ranong admitted on Thursday that the 2012 export growth target of 15 per cent set by the Ministry of Commerce would not be achieved.

However, the minister said, he was  not heavy hearted about it because three major factors -- government spending, domestic consumption and private investment -- would enhance economic growth with stability over the remaining months.

Mr Kittiratt expected these three factors would help push economic growth to  between 5.5 per cent and 6.0 per cent this year, as projected by the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).

He believed the exports would grow by nine per cent this year, even though the NESDB had previously projected export growth of only 7.3 per cent.
