Twenty-five-year-old Phang Thong collapsed while her mahout was leading her on an exercise walk this morning at the elephant hospital run by the Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation.
The hospital has treated more than 20 pregnant elephants whch were sent there. It is the first time both mother and her baby have died.
Phang Thong was admitted to the hospital on Sunday night after her amniotic sac broke, spilling large quantities of birth fluid and causing her a lot of pain, according to the mahout.
Phang Thong was weak when she arrived at the hospital and had to be fed intravenously with fluids and supplements.
Veterinarian Preecha Puangkham, director of the hospital’s medical section, said an examination indicated her baby was probably dead inside her womb. The team could not treat her as long as the dead calf remained in her womb.
A post mortem examination found the body of a male baby elephant which was in the wrong position for birth. It had probably been dead for at least five days before Phang Thong’s arrival at the hospital.
Vets are waiting on blood test results to clarify the cause of death.
