Police and a medical unit went to Wat Luang Por Im in Satthahip district after receiving a report from a person living nearby that a pregnant woman was about to give birth there.

The Cambodian woman, named only as Ms Pim, 25, had refused to go to hospital because she was living in Thailand illegally and feared she would to be sent back to Cambodia.

Police said when they found her she was confused and afraid.

Only after a lot of persuasion did the woman agree to be taken to the nearby Navy Hospital.

People in the area told police the Khmer woman sought refuge at the temple months ago. She claimed to have been raped and had no family and no one to help her.

She said she did not file a complaint about the rape with police because she was living in Thailand illegally.
