Piroon Norkeaw, the prison chief, called police on Saturday to report a fight between two groups of inmates in which bed sheets were set on fire and missiles thrown. He then ordered all prisoners to return to their cells immediately.

The Chang Puek police station and emergency workers were contacted to help stop the brawl. It took them more than 40 minutes to eventually contain the situation. One officer was hit in his face with a rock. Five inmates were also injured; one of them sustained a head wound while others only suffered some bruises.

Mr Piroon said that most of the inmates involved in the fight were drug convicts known to have disciplinary problems. All cells will be searched for possible weapons in order to prevent future incidents, he added.

All of the approximately 4,000 male inmates will be relocated to another facility in Mae Tang district in the province. Afterwards, the prison will be converted into a women’s prison.
