Pol Sub Lt Siam Suan-in, duty officer at Uthong police station in Suphan Buri province, said Angkana Klaharn, 20, turned herself in to about 12.30am.
The suspect, who appeared weak, stressed and distracted, confessed that she killed her baby daughter by strangling her and left her near a building.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the baby girl wrapped in a towel. The baby was rushed to Thonburi Uthong Hospital but doctors could not revive her.
According to Angkana's testimony, she took her daughter out of her house without a clear destination in mind. After arriving at a bus station in Uthong district, she went into a quiet alley and then started strangling her child for no apparent reason.
The suspect told police that she decided to surrender to police because she was afraid her husband and relatives would know what she had done and did not want her husband to lose his job because of her.
Police took her to hospital to see if she is genuinely mentally ill before taking further action.
