Department chief Wimol Chanthararothai said the ban, which is among the department's measures to manage marine resources, will take effect from Friday until May 15. It will cover 26,400 sq km of sea in parts of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon and Surat Thani.

Violators could face a fine of up to 10,000 baht and/or a jail term of up to one year, Mr Wimol said.

Studies had found fish were ready to lay their eggs during this period and parts of the sea in the three coastal provinces were suitable spawning grounds for them, particularly mackerel, the department chief said.

Last year, the population of marine species increased by 2.34 times after the three-month fishing ban, he added.
