Chalad Homchan, a volunteer rescuer for the foundation, told Sai Mai police the attack occurred about 2am when the vehicle was parked on the side of the road along Khlong Song in Sai Mai district, on alert for emergency calls.

Mr Chalad told police that he was sitting inside the pickup when two men arrived on a motorcycle and stopped on the other side of the road.

The pillion rider pulled out an 11mm handgun and opened fire, leaving eight bullet holes on the right side of the foundation's vehicle and also hitting the right front tyre.

One bullet narrowly missed his right leg, Mr Chalad said.

Mr Chalad believed it was an act of intimidation by a group of people who make money from the medical evacuation of people injured or killed in road accidents.  The presence of the Ruam Katanyu Foundation vehicle in the area, on standby for rescue operations, might have annoyed them, he said.
