Sasipapha Huadthong was apprehended at a dormitory in Bang Phli district, Pol Maj Gen Chanut Thanataweerat, deputy chief of the Provincial Police Region 1, said on Monday.
Three identity cards belonging to Gingkaew Wongtao, Vilairat Sittiprapha and Angkana sae Chua and several ATM cards were found and seized as evidence.
Ms Sasipapha confessed that she made people believe that she, under Ms Gingkaew’s identity, had Furby dolls for sale at 3,200 baht apiece and convinced them to transfer the money totalling 450,000 baht from buyers into a bank account which she also registered under Miss Gingkaew’s name.
She admitted that in January 2012 she also opened bank accounts to trick people into purchasing mobile phones under Ms Angkana’s name, swindling 200,000 baht.
The woman added that in the same year, she opened another bank account under Ms Vilairat’s name and scammed people into paying a combined 5,000 baht as tutor enrollment fees.
Ms Gingkaew, 22, told police that she was called in by investigators from various police stations who suspected she was conning people in buying Furby dolls through advertisements posted on various websites.
She explained that it was not her. She said someone had stolen her identity card and used it to impersonate her.
The police tracked down Ms Sasipapha by tracing the history of her posts in Instagram and Line Messenger. They found the two women studied at the same university.
Pol Maj Gen Chanut said investigators have also obtained images, from a closed circuit camera, of Ms Sasipapha frequently withdrawing money from the same ATM machine. They later discovered that the bank transactions were made under an account registered to Ms Gingkaew.
Police took her into custody for further proceedings. They said other victims of the fraud had gone to Bang Phli police station to file a report.
