Nonthaburi police chief Thanayuth Wuthijamrasthamrong said Wanna Joysrigate, 33, had attempted to rape a 26-year-old woman passenger on Sunday night, when she was the last passenger in his van on a trip from Chatuchak to Bang Bua Thong housing estate in Nonthaburi province.

The woman filed a complaint with police on Monday, saying Wanna drove at high speed and did not stop to pick up any  passengers during the time she was alone with him in the van. He parked at a bus stop in front of Klao Rattana housing estate on Rattanathibet Road and approached her in the back seat, trying  to force himself on her.

The woman resisted, but she told police the driver only stopped after she offered him the 400 baht in her wallet plus another 1,500 baht from her bank account.

The driver then took the passenger to withdraw money at a nearby ATM and fled the scene with the 1,900 baht in cash, Pol Maj Gen Thanayuth told the media.

The police chief said Wanna had a record of multiple crimes including theft, assault and selling drugs in Bangkok’s Bang Khunthian district, and that he had recently completed a jail term.
