Pol Lt Tawatchai Sookpawan, a duty officer at Suan Prik Thai police station, said he was informed of the accident by local residents about 9am.
At the scene, police found the body of Sitthichai Khunsopa wedged in his crumpled Nissan Cefiro at kilometre marker No. 1 on the Bang Poon-Bang Pa-in expressway.
The driver's legs were severed from his body.
Rescue workers used cutting tools to remove the body from the completely wrecked car.
Pol Lt Tawatchai said sleep-deprivation was the likely cause of the accident because evidence at the scene indicated that the Nakhon Sawan native did not brake before the fatal crash.
Investigators reported Mr Sitthichai’s car first slid about 10 metres along the wire fence on the roadside before colliding head-on with the elevated expressway pillar, killing him instantly.
The collision took place after Mr Sitthichai dropped his girlfriend at her home in Bangkok and he was travelling back to his hometown.
