The fatal accident occurred at the annual Bung Fai Festival at Ban Jorm Sadet in tambon Hat Kam of Muang district.
The two, a man and a woman, were identified as Anuwat Pinthuwong, 47, and Sa-ngiam Sonthirat, 41. They were members of Pako Tambon Administration Organisation.
Police said Anuwat was driving a Toyota sedan into the festival grounds with Sa-ngiam sitting next to him when three large bung fai, or ‘‘rockets of fire’’, were launched into the sky about 100 metres from them.
Police saida device attached to one of the rockets to control its flight direction came off after it was electrically detonated. The rocket spun around in the air before it flew back down and slammed into the side of the vehicle where Sa-ngiam was sitting. The car was engulfed in flames.
Bystanders tried to put out the fire and rescue the two officials but they could only manage to pull Anuwat out of the car. Sa-ngiam was killed at the scene while Anuwat succumbed to burn injuries in hospital.
The event was organised by Muang Nong Khai Municipality and the local community. Police have called in the organisers of the festival and people concerned with the deadly rocket for questioning.
