Policeman, ranger killed in South
A police officer was killed by a bomb explosion on a road in Yala and a paramilitary ranger shot dead in an ambush in Pattani on Tuesday night, reports said.

Police at Krong Penang received a report of a bomb explosion on the Krong Penang-Ban Luemu road, tambon Krong Penang about 10pm.
Police and a military bomb disposal unit rushed to the scene but found their way obstructed by nail spikes and burning car tyres scattered on the road.
They cleared the road and on arriving at ther scene found eight policeman had been injured by the bomb, which destroyed their pickup truck. The wounded were taken Yala hospital, where Pol Capt Sama-air Luemae, sub-inspector at Krong Penang police station, later died.
Police said the explosion left a two metres wide and one metre deep hole in the road. They estimated that the bomb, inside two fire extinguisher cylinders, weighed about 30kg. It had been hidden in a drainage pipe running under the road. The home-made bomb was detonated when the police vehicle drove over the spot.
Police blamed separatist militants.
In Pattani, Pol Col Dulayaman Yaena, chief of Kapo police station, said he received a report that one paramilitary ranger was killed and two others wounded in an ambush on the Saiburi-Kapo road in front of Taloh Dueraman health station in Kapo district about 9pm.
At the scene police found the body of Ranger Chakrapol Suwannakut, 28. He was shot in the head and body and died on the spot.
The two injured rangers, Abukori Muensomboon, 35, and Masaree Yusoh, 25, were taken to Kapo hospital.
Investigators said the three men, from Rangers Company 4306, were travelling on a motorcycle along the road when gunmen hiding in roadside forest fired on them with assault rifles. The assailants then fled. It was believed the rangers were off duty.
Police were hunting for the gunmen, believed to members of a southern separatist group active in the area.
