Panjapol Tuenpakdi, 23, a third year student enrolled in the business administration faculty, and Pason Rodkerd, 24, a master's degree student from the same faculty, were arrested for conspiring with five others to use wooden bats to savagely beat Thawichart Soimas, 52, a car park guard at the university on March 17.
The assault stemmed from an argument between the students and the guard over parking in a prohibited area. Mr Thawichart sustained head and facial injuries, a broken right leg and severe bruising to his body.
The defendants were originally given two years and one month in jail and a fine of 1,000 baht each on two counts of assault causing bodily harm and assault, but the sentences were reduced by half.
The judge cited their confession and the fact the offenders have never been convicted of any offence and that their families had paid 220,000 baht to Mr Thawichart in compensation.
Mr Thawichart said he ran to pick up a hatchet and hit the defendants in an attempt to defend himself but missed.
The court said the plaintiff and defendants met on several occasions after the incident and had reached a compromise agreement.
Mr Thawichart asked the court to suspend the sentence for three years, saying he was satisfied with the plaintiffs’ compensation.
The court ordered Mr Panjapol and Mr Pason to report to probation officers for two years and carry out 48 hours of community service.
