The White House and Democrats and Republicans in Congress reached agreement over taxes, and agreed to suspend automatic spending cuts for two months, congressional aides said.

"That is my understanding of the deal the White House struck with Senate Republicans," a Democratic source said of the latest moves to avert the fiscal cliff that has transfixed Washington for weeks.
