Pol Lt Kamol Yongrum, a duty officer at Nadee police station in Prachin Buri, said Pichit Somboonpan, 36, was shot dead while he was drinking outside his relative's home in Nadee district.

He was hit by two bullets and succumbed to his wounds on the way to Kabinburi Hospital.

Police tracked down the attackers' pickup truck and arrested Pichitchai Sritabaek, 21. An AK-47 rifle and five rounds of ammunition were seized as evidence.

Mr Pichitchai's accomplice, whose name was not given, escaped before the arresting officers arrived.

Urai Chitpaew, the victim's sister, told investigators that Pichit came to visit his cousins with his wife and daughter.

She said Pichit's 19-year-old brother Anurak Chitpaew was heard arguing with someone over the phone about a woman.

Moments later, a pickup truck drove past the house and Mr Anurak suddenly walked away from the area. The vehicle then came around a second time and two shots were fired, she said.

Mr Pichitchai was taken into custody for interrogation, police said.
