The white-masks are protesting against government policies, particularly the rice scheme, according to the reports.
The white masks, or “V for Thailand” group, claim the rice pledging programme has caused a heavy debt burden on the people rather than enhancing benefits for rice farmers.
The white masks also plan to rally in front of the nearby National Thai Police headquarters to protest the failure of police to prevent their colleagues from being harmed by the red shirts in Chiang Mai recently.
Pol Maj Gen Wallop Prathummuang, commander of metropolitan police division 6, said 700 police were deployed at the Ratchaprasong intersection to ensure law and order and to prevent a possible violent confrontation between the two groups.
Pol Maj Gen Wallop was confident the officers would keep the situation under control.
On Friday, about 200 red-shirt people assaulted and beat up a small group of white-mask people in Chiang Mai.
The white masks were protesting at the Health Park behind Chiang Mai University when about 200 red shirts gathering at the Grand Waroros Hotel moved in to attack them.
