In the annual tournament, at which more than 130 players from 14 countries took part, Thailand A team won the overall title with 17 gold, 19 silver and 20 bronze medals, while Iran came in second with 12 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze. Thailand B team also got 8 gold, Vietnam 6 gold and Malaysia 1 gold.

The highlight of the final day was in the women’s 50kg, in which Paweena Raksachart upset Tippawan Khamsri, who was one of four players chosen to represent Thailand at the Asian Games in Incheon later this year.

Chutinant Bhirombhakdi, president of the Thailand Karate Federation, was satisfied with the performances but said more international-standard judges were needed.

“Our judges who can work at international events are not enough,” he said. “It is what we have to improve for next editions.”

“As for the players, I was really impressed, especially with the young ones.”

Thailand will compete at next month’s tournament in Malaysia as their warm-up for the 17th Asian Games in South Korea. The association is targeting their maiden gold medal at the Asian Games.
