No bail for red on lese majeste rap

The Criminal Court on Tuesday again rejected a temporary bail request by Somyos Prueksakasemsuk, a key red shirt leader who has been arrested and detained on lese majeste-related offences.

Karom Polthaklang, Mr Somyos's lawyer, filed the request with the court and put up land title deeds worth almost 1.7 million baht as surety.

However, the court denied bail, stating it had previously rejected Mr Somyos’s application for release and already provided at explanation for its denial, therefore there was no reason to grant temporary bail.

Mr Karom filed a temporary bail plea for his client with the court in November last year. The court dismissed it.

Mr Somyos, the 51-year-old executive editor of the now-defunct Voice Of Thaksin magazine, was alleged by authorities to have published anti-monarchy articles. He was arrested at an immigration checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province on April 30 last year while trying to cross into Cambodia.
