The armed forces are ready to step in to help police ensure peace and order in Bangkok and its vicinity if the situation escalates to violence, Lt Gen Paradorn Pattanatabut, secretary general of the National Security Council (NSC), said on Friday.

He said caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will this afternoon chair a meeting of NSC, which will be attended by commanders of the armed forces and security agencies.

The security units had assessed the situation and it was agreed that the Internal Security Act (ISA)  is adequate to maintain law and order for the current anti-government protests, Lt Gen Paradorn said.
