Tanks and Roses

On Sept 19, 2006, soldiers loyal to army chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin staged a coup d'etat, ousting caretaker prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who was in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Tanks and troops of the 4th Cavalry Battalion moved into strategic points in Bangkok to take control of the city. The coup makers, who initially called themselves the Democratic Reform Council, imposed martial law, abrogated the 1997 constitution, dissolved the Constitution Court, the caretaker government and the Senate that night. Many Bangkok residents, who largely supported the coup, came out on the streets the next day and presented roses to the soldiers. (Photos by Post photographers)
