Why Motorcycle Taxi Drivers Just Can't Win

The Association of Motorcycle Taxi Drivers (AMTD) has complained to the transport ministry that its members are coerced to pay protection money of up to 150 baht a day to extortion gangs, or face physical assault. With adviser to the deputy transport minister Wan Yubamrung assigned to investigate the problem, the heads of two registered “win” in Bang Na district explain some of the difficulties they encounter due to competition from unlicensed rival ranks. Video by Pattanapong Hirunard and Pakawat Sunpituksaree.

At 2:10 of the video, the driver takes a customer right in front of my office/shophouse. What's funny is that my office is closed and there's a lady sitting at a table selling fruit and vegetables right on our doorstep, without my knowledge (until this video).

This queue on soi bearing (107) and Sukhumvit is generally okay as far as queues go.

None of them are good either! They want the competition to leave so that they can charge whatever they want. Competition is good for consumers period.

I've asked a few motorcycle taxi around my area to go to a nearby place which isn't even a km away and they straight away start off with 200 baht (in sukhumvit). I don't even bother negotiating....just walk a bit and then stop a wing wing and pay about 40 baht for the same. :)

The motorbike taxis in my soi subsidize their income by opening up illegal casinos in the slum and paying off the police . Real nice fellows NOT.
