Police in Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province have reprimanded six Thais caught fishing illegally in Samrong town.

According to the Khmer Times, officers in Kon Kriel commune caught the men spear fishing as they patrolled the area at about midnight on Wednesday.

None was able to produce the correct paperwork needed to fish in the area.

Kon Kriel commune police chief Path Kim said the six men were informed that their activities were illegal and released.

“They were Khmer Surin people living along the border with Cambodia and have relatives living in our community. They are Thai and have lived in Thailand for a long time but they often come to Cambodia. They were just fishing for fun,” he said.

He added that the men, from Thailand’s Surin province, spoke clear Khmer.

“I contacted provincial police and they recommend that we educate them and warn them to bring legal papers next time,” Mr Kim said.
