Thailand has expressed interest in a joint fisheries venture with Brunei, a government spokesman said on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha broached the subject of the joint project in an audience granted by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in Bandar Seri Begawan, spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said.
The proposed joint venture would operate under regulations granted for foreign trawlers between 45 and 200 nautical miles of the sultanate's coast, he added.
Thailand was seeking new fishing sources for its trawler fleets due to the depleted marine resources in its territorial waters.
Indonesia launched a new draconian policy in December to sink all ships entering the country's territorial waters for illegal fishing.
Gen Prayut is on a two-day visit to Brunei which ends on Thursday.
The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on agricultural cooperation on Wednesday.
Agriculture Minister Petipong Pungbun Na Ayudhya told the Thai News Agency on Wednesday that the agreement included plans to develop Halal food.
