Vietnam monk gets year in jail for gambling

HANOI — A court in central Vietnam has jailed a monk for gambling, a news report said Friday.

Monk Ho Sy Quynh received a year in prison, while two other monks, Truong Ngoc Hau and Phan Van Trung, were both handed suspended sentences of six months, the newspaper Thanh Nien reported.

The case came to light in March when police caught three monks and two others gambling in a pagoda in Da Nang province.

The group gambled in Mr Hau's private room at the pagoda. Police seized two packs of cards and about US$700 at the scene.

Gambling is popular but illegal in Vietnam.

Mr Quynh received tougher sentence because he had been jailed for three years in 2011 for drug trafficking.

He will reportedly return to the pagoda after leaving prison.
