More than 3 million tourists visited Cambodian during the first eight months of this year, with visitors from Thailand jumping 20%.

A Cambodian Tourism Ministry report covering January to August showed more than 3 million travellers arriving in the country, a 5.4% increase from the 2.88 million year-on-year for the same period last year, the Phnom Penh Post reported.

Tourists from Thailand increased 20% to 187,000 during the same period, it added.

The number of visitors from China rose 26% and Vietnamese tourists jumped 11.5%, the newspaper said without going into detail.

"The increase of Chinese arrivals to Cambodia is due to the rise of investment opportunities in the country," the Phnom Pehn Post quoted Kong Sopheareak, director of statistics at the ministry, as saying.

Cambodia is targeting 5 million tourists this year.
