Jakarta attacks to have no immediate effect on Thailand

The terrorist attacks in Jakarta are unlikely to have an immediate effect on tourism and investment in Thailand, but there could be caution by investors in Asean overall, a senior Thai businessman said on Thursday.

Isara Vongkusolkit, the chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC), said the lethal attacks in central Jakarta would hit Indonesia’s tourism and investment sectors.

But he said Thailand’s exports are unlikely to be affected. Thailand and Indonesia manufacture and export almost similar products, while most of the factories owned by Thai firms in Indonesia are located on the outskirts of Jakarta.

“We believe Thailand’s investments there will remain intact, as the demand by Indonesian consumers is strong,” Mr Isara said.

Malee Choklumlerd, director-general of the International Trade Promotion Department, said  Thai commercial officials in Jakarta have been ordered to report on and evaluate the impact on Thailand’s trade and investment from the attacks.
