Suu Kyi has cataract surgery

YANGON — Aung San Suu Kyi, the de facto leader of Myanmar’s new civilian government, underwent successful cataract surgery on Saturday, the <i>New York Times</i> reports.

The operation, to remove a cataract from her right eye, was performed at a government hospital in Nay Pyi Daw, Myanmar’s capital, said U Win Htein, a senior official with the National League for Democracy (NLD).

Aung San Suu Kyi’s doctor, Tin Myo Win, said a cataract would be removed from her left eye later this month. An NLD source said the second operation would probably be performed next Saturday. The procedures were scheduled to coincide with the the 10-day Burmese New Year holiday, which begins on Monday.
