Chinese in stew over California shark fin threat

Chefs in San Francisco's Chinatown are sharpening their knives to defend the right to serve shark fin soup, a staple in high-end Chinese restaurants in the city.

Dead sharks are piled up in East Javanese port of Banyuwangi where many of the fins will be exported to Singapore and China. This large scale commercial exploitation of sharks has led to a drastic decline in shark populations globally.

Two local assemblymen have proposed a law to ban the transport and sale of shark fins in California, which would essentially outlaw the high-end Chinese delicacy often served on special occasions.
