Burma president vows 'healthy democracy'

Burma's president Monday pledged to establish a "healthy democracy" after nearly half a century of iron-fisted military rule as he sought Singapore's help to modernise the creaking economy.

Myanmar President Thein Sein (L) and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (R) witness the exchange of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) by Singapore Minister Foreign K. Shanmugam (2nd R) and Myanmar's Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin at the presidential palace in Singapore.

President Thein Sein, in Singapore for a four-day state visit, also appealed to the global community to continue encouraging Burma on its reform path, saying the transition period was fraught with challenges.
