Asian leaders call for lifting of Myanmar sanctions

Asian leaders Tuesday called for Western sanctions against Myanmar to be lifted after its historic polls, as they held summit talks also dominated by North Korea and maritime disputes with China.

Myanmar's President Thein Sein (L) is greeted by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen at the 20th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) in Phnom Penh. The group has called for Western sanctions against Myanmar to be lifted, as it holds talks also dominated by North Korea and maritime disputes with China.

The call came amid international praise for Myanmar's by-elections on Sunday which gave democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate and former political prisoner, a seat in parliament for the first time.

Let's all not get carried away with Burma's bit of window dressing. From what I understand, 40 seats were up for grabs out of 400. This is merely delaying tactics in the hope that the west will think things are changing and ease up on sanctions. A measured response, in line with what has been done, would be the best answer. We all truly hope and wish for a stability in Burma, this is just the beginning.
