Surin fears South China Sea could become 'Asia's Palestine'

Territorial disputes in the South China Sea could become "Asia's Palestine", according to the outgoing secretary-general of Asean. 

Surin Pitsuwan warns that Chinese claims to several islands that are disputed by the Philippines, Vietnam and others risk destabilising the entire region.  

“We have to be mindful of the fact that the South China Sea could evolve into another Palestine,” Mr Surin told the Financial Times.
