Surapong wary of temple ruling

Thailand has a larger stake to consider if it opts to defy a ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Preah Vihear Temple, the Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

Despite the tensions in the surrounding border area, Preah Vihear temple in the first nine months of last year attracted 13,140 foreigners, up 77% from a year earlier. (EPA Photo)

Amid mounting calls by nationalist groups for the country to defy the ICJ ruling, the Foreign Ministry has cautioned the public that Thailand needs to comply with whatever decision is issued from The Hague in October.

It would have been in the interest of both countries (and the rest of the world) if the governments of Cambodia and Thailand would have worked out an agreement that jointly promoted Preah Vihear Temple as a tourist site. Hopefully that still may be possible even with this ICJ ruling and the past rhetoric of the PAD and Abhisit's government.

Every country's people believes implicitly that their own country's insistence is right and a sound argument in relation to a territorial dispute. In the first place, the thinking of a boundary line began after the Industrial Revolution on 18th century in Europe for realizing the some purposes. Europe expanded to the world.

If people claiming the territory of Thailand has been an Cambodian, maybe they would have insisted that the land around the Preah Vihear Temple is a territory of Cambodia. At one time, the Khmer Empire had ruled vast extent of land over and/or vassalized parts of modern-day isaan-district, east-Thailand, land of Bangkok, Andaman Sea coasts, and Malaysia, southern Vietnam. So, Cambodia also can insist same as Thailand. I hope a peaceful resolution for conomic-growth of ASEAN.

TODAY if I go to SISAKET I cannot buy a tour to visit Preah Vihear Temple.... but if I go to SIEM REAP I can buy a tour to visit it...
It was supposed this place was no man's land, but some can go and other cannot.
    Who is the stupiest ?

This was settled in 1962 and it will be settled again in 2013 with Thailand on the short end. The big question is what will Thailand do when they are told that the ruling did not go in their favor. Get ready for more riots from the yellow shirts, screams of sovereignty and a ton of misinformation.

"What worried him,he said, was that anti-government forces were exploiting and politicising the ICJ issue".
What worries some amongst the public,is that pro-Thaksin forces were exploiting the ICJ issue to assure the Shinawatras and partners win off-shore oil explorations within the sea borders of Cambodia at the expense of historically documented land belonging to Thailand.
