Delhi gang-rape accused in court for first time

Five men appeared in court for the first time on Monday to face charges over the murder and gang-rape of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi amid chaotic scenes that forced the hearing behind closed doors.

Indian police stand guard at an entrance to the Saket District Court in New Delhi on January 7, 2013. An Indian court hearing the case of five men accused of gang-raping and murdering a 23-year-old student was cleared on Monday as chaotic scenes forced the hearing to be held behind closed doors.

Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan told AFP the men had been appointed a defence lawyer, but declined to comment on reports that two of the defendants have reportedly offered to cooperate in return for more lenient sentences.
