Human rights activists say the disappearance of Lao community advocate Sombath Somphone is a slap in the face for the Asean Human Rights Declaration and the regional bloc's human rights agency.

Niran Pitakwatchara, a human rights commissioner, said the Thai government should encourage discussions about the case within the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).

Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Burma are all deeply embedded in third world mentality whereas power and money are more important than law and order. For ASEAN or any else to think this will ever change, keep dreaming.

If we are to become AEC as one ASEAN community the mantra which the founders have laid as "non interference" should be abolished what Khun Jon Up...has pointed out. It's like getting rid of a bad tumor ...It's really disgusting.

It is a real shame for something like this to keep happening in Buddhist countries like Laos and Thailand. Sombath's disappearance is exactly the same how our own Somchai Neelapaijit disappeared not too long ago while under police's custody under the premiership of TS.

This oft touted acronym will change nothing.

“Angkhana Neelapaijit, director of the Justice for Peace Foundation, said unless enforced disappearance is stipulated as a crime…..”

“a "forced disappearance" qualifies as a crime against humanity and, thus, is not subject to a statute of limitations”. (Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court).
