Vietnam deports US citizen accused of 'anti-state' plot

Vietnamese authorities have deported an American pro-democracy activist after detaining him for nine months on charges of attempting to overthrow the state, state media reported Wednesday.

This undated picture taken by the Vietnam News Agency shows pro-democracy activist Nguyen Quoc Quan, a US citizen of Vietnamese origin, in Ho Chi Minh City. He had been deported after nine months in detention.

Nguyen Quoc Quan, who is of Vietnamese origin and is a member of the US-based Viet Tan Party -- which Hanoi views as a terrorist organisation -- was arrested on April 17 last year when he arrived in Vietnam.
