AFP pictures show then and now of tsunami

The piles of rubble left behind by the receding tsunami have largely gone, but two years after nature visited its fury, some stretches of Japan's battered northeast remain little more than ravaged wastelands. 

The tsunami-hit area of Natori, Miyagi prefecture, on March 14, 2011 (left) and the same area on January 12, 2012 (centre) and then nearly two years later on February 21, 2013.

Where once stood mountains of detritus, the splintered remains of wooden homes and shattered lives, occasional new buildings have crept up and some houses have been repaired.
